From that point we began praying that God would make it clear what he wanted from us next on this journey.  We felt that in order to make a good decision we needed to explore all of our options.  We spent a few months meeting with different people, collecting information, and reading everything we could get our hands on.  At different times we felt that we had hope about this direction or that direction, but none of them seemed quite right.   Friends walking beside us would lovingly ask questions and listen as we talked about various ideas and options.

In September, we read a book that challenged us to view some of our choices from new perspectives.  We began praying that God would give us clarity and impress upon our hearts a heart for him and his mission in this world.  Over the next few months it felt that we were constantly hearing about ways God desires for us to join him in redeeming and reconciling his creation.   We prayed that God would allay our fears because we simply wanted to have the courage to move forward in faith.  Through this process of seeking Him, God has exceeded all of our hopes and expectations.  He has placed a burning desire in us to surrender our previous expectations for our family and our future in order to be open to the dreams He has for us.  So we are attempting to follow God’s call in James 1:27 that we give homes and a place of belonging to the orphans of this world.

Psalms 68 says it so beautifully….

Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
extol him who rides on the clouds—
his name is the LORD—
and rejoice before him.

5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is God in his holy dwelling.

6 God sets the lonely in families,
he leads forth the prisoners with singing;
but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

God is the one who is about the business of setting the lonely in families but we must be families that are open to God’s desire for us to be family to the fatherless.  Therefore, we are stepping out in faith, trusting that God will go before us as we begin our adoption journey.  This may not be the route everyone can choose, but it is the road we have chosen to travel.  It has become more than just our choice…now it is our calling!

So, we have decided to pursue adoption from Ethiopia.  Ethiopia is a country that has seen its share of difficult times.  We have chosen international adoption for many reasons.  First, it seemed to be where God was leading us at this time.  Our hearts ache at the conditions we hear about and have seen in other countries.  In some small way we can live out the good news of God that the lonely will be placed in families. It may seem overwhelming to make even a small dent in bringing an end to the reality of millions of orphans in this world, BUT we can make a tremendous difference in the life of at least one child. We are both passionate about finding ways to be involved in the Jesus story and feel this is a need that we can not ignore.  While international adoption is very expensive, it is also expensive to do many other things we choose to do in the United States.  What better way could we use what God has blessed us with than to partner with Him in bringing life out of death? So we journey forward in faith, confident that God will provide what we need, as we need it.

We covet your prayers as we travel this path.  We are grateful that we both have so many people who love and care for us and are willing to walk alongside us as we eagerly anticipate meeting baby Darling.
