Our culture invites us to chase after so many different things.  We chase after the American Dream.  We chase a particular lifestyle.  We chase jobs, money, possessions, friends, and identity.  We convince ourselves that this is what life is all about.  We convince ourselves that happiness comes once we are able to fulfill these “man-made” dreams.  But often what happens is that the more we chase, the more what we are chasing only continues to elude us!

It’s easy to get caught up chasing after a particular family portrait for our lives…one which includes 2.5 kids, where everyone oohs and ahhs saying “he’s got your eyes,” or “she clearly takes after her mother,” where the resemblance is obvious and pride comes from knowing the family line will continue into another generation. But is that really what family is about?  Family is not just about what you encounter in the epidermis, but it is about what you experience in the heart.  It’s about love…acceptance…trust…commitment…faithfulness…belonging…blood.  Well, not my blood.  But the blood of the One that makes it possible for us all to be part of His family.  No matter our differences, the color of our skin, where we come from, who we are or who we try to be.  God makes us all ONE.

The challenge for all of us is to take a step back and think about what it is we spend our time chasing.  What illusions have we fooled ourselves into following?  God has been working in our lives to bring us to a place where we are done chasing the world’s dreams and expectations for our family and our future.  Instead we want to do all we can to chase after the heart of God, to be open to His dreams for our family, and to follow Him as He leads us to capture a new portrait of our future that is more than we could ask or imagine…one that we trust will not elude us!
